Meet the Marathoner: Nayrin Ruiz of Achilles Panama
Achilles athletes from around the world are gearing up to race the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon, including Nayrin Ruiz of Achilles Panama! Nayrin, 39, lost her vision as an adult and has been a member of the Panama chapter since 2019.
When she first joined, she was hesitant to run without using her walking stick. Running with volunteer guides and listening to their descriptions of her surroundings “has been a beautiful experience,” she says.
As her confidence has grown, she has raced in multiple 5K races in her country and her first international half marathon at the Miami Half Marathon in 2020. This November will be her first full marathon. Her guides Martha and Joe will be joining her. Though her main goal is to finish, she hopes to hit a good finish time.
“Running is my passion. Running is life and keeps me healthy. It makes me very happy and I hope to continue to run for many years,” says Nayrin.
The mother of two is also currently working towards her law degree. Read about what motivates Nayrin in the Q & A below.
How has Achilles Panama made an impact on your life?
“Achilles Panama has impacted my life in so many big ways. My life has changed. I’ve been given more opportunities, I’ve learned how to really dedicate myself to something I am passionate about, and it has improved my well being. I really enjoy running and the health benefits are noticeable.
Thank you for all the volunteers that give us their time to be able to run. Yes, we can do it!”
What advice or message does she have for other athletes living with a disability?
“My message for other people with a disability is to dare to do it! Go for it. You can do it. Running is life. It positively impacts physical health and mental health.”
What’s your favorite running gear?
“My new tennis shoes. Also the bright Achilles Panama shirt is very important! It’s so bright. It gives us visibility to society and other runners along the way.”
What are your race rituals?
“Before a race, I eat bread with peanut butter or bread with jam. Coffee with milk is a must and a small banana. I always pray before the race. I ask God for strength. During the race, I keep repeating some of my favorite mantras to keep me going. “Mind over body, mind over body! You can do it. Yes, you are going to reach the finish line!”
