Achilles Houston Celebrates Opening of First Fully Accessible Local Park

On December 11th, Achilles Houston celebrated the grand opening of the James Driver Inclusive Park in Texas. The park is the first of its kind in Harris County, designed to accommodate residents of all ages and abilities to exercise and socialize.

"Having the first inclusive park in the city of Houston is ground-breaking. The James Driver Inclusive Park gives people of all abilities the chance to gather and play together in the same place. Achilles Houston members are thrilled to have an alternative place where we can gather for our workouts. This is exhilarating especially with Team Achilles Kids coming to Houston! We hope this is the beginning of many more inclusive parks,” says Gloria Suarez, Director of Achilles Houston.

Achilles Houston joined the county in the opening ceremony of the park. The event featured music, a photo booth, face painting, live dance performances, food trucks, and a Christmas tree lighting.

Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia spearheaded the project with the vision of creating a space that is accessible to all. The 29-acre park is located in a central area of the county and features a widened walking trail that can accommodate two people in wheelchairs, as well as a playground with wheelchair accessible equipment. The park also has a sensory garden, “Big Bridge,” allowing both children and adults with disabilities to sharpen their sensory abilities.

The opening of the James Driver All-Inclusive Park is a milestone for the disability community and hopefully the first of many accessible parks.
